The dappled mare could tell someone was close. She lowered her head and sniffed the air around her. Vampire blood. Male. Strong. Close. She could get all that through her vampire senses. She would normally not be so interested by another, but this one had a very familiar smell to him. She shook her head, a chill running down her dappled body. It can’t be him… she thought. She killed him many many years ago. He met the true death by her own hoof and fangs. But this smell was close to his. Not exact but almost like he had been around him before. The smell should not have been stuck on him this long… she thought again.
The sun was just starting to poke through the trees in her forest, but it could never each all the way through the dark, thick parts. Vex made sure to keep her vampires well hidden in the dark since the sun would burn their skins. Vex could withstand the sun longer than any half vampire since she was a Pureblood… then the other vampire she was smelling stepped out of the cover. He was a few feet away now. Vex froze in place. He smelled like him, but looked like her. If her heart rate could go up, it would be right now. It would be beating out of her chest right now. Who is this, she wondered.

To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?
[33] On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain. These cases are perfectly simple and easy to distinguish. In a free hour, when our power of choice is untrammeled and when nothing prevents our being able to do what we like best, every pleasure is to be welcomed and every pain avoided. But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains.
