Rules of Skill
- All characters on Avestral join at skill level 0.
- Please see our EXP Guide for earning how to redeem levels for your character.
- Besides EXP, characters may level up with a Level+ Token earned from events.
- Players may interpret these levels as they see fit based on the magic their character has. A level 1 character will not be able to break down a door unscathed, or maybe even at all. Staff will review levels for characters and may reach out to request changes on a case-by-case basis.
- Players may describe how their characters use a skill, so long as a player can explain how the character is using the skill, they will suffer no penalty on a skill check.
- Characters who reach Levels 25-30 are considered veterans or experts of their chosen skill and are often well-known throughout Avestral.
- Legendary level milestones will be chosen by the staff and will act as quests for your character.
- Players may continue to play Legendary status characters, or they may retire them once they reach that status.
- Legendary characters may accomplish supernatural feats, players will request a skill for their character and staff will approve its use. These abilities will have limits such as can be used once per day, etc...
- These rules are subject to change/adjust to better fit the flow of the game as it progresses.

Questions to Consider
- Why should I level up my character in skills? What reward does this give me?
- Skills determine the outcomes of events on the site. Characters who participate in events or opt into events that are randomly dropped into their threads will be able to make a skill check. Based on the character’s skill level, skill checks determine how successful they are at accomplishing the given task. Characters may earn a total bonus of +5 from the skill tree unless they achieve Level 30 or Legendary Levels.
At higher levels, we may adjust the die used to determine outcomes (so that challenges for characters still scale and the game still feels rewarding). High-skilled characters should be able to accomplish great feats but also feel challenged in doing so.

- How many Skills can I achieve level 30 and beyond?
- You can achieve Legendary levels only for one skill category (Presence, Fortitude, Essence, Judgement, or Deftness) You may achieve level 30 with two total categories. That means you can be level 30 in both Presence and Judgement if you’d like, but only one of those maybe be Legendary level. Other skills will cap out at level 10.
- What does that mean for my character's skills?
- This is in an effort to balance the system. You can either hyper-specialize your character, or you can make them more of a generalist. If you’d like to go the route of a generalist, you can have a maximum of 3 skills at level 20. All other skills will still max out at level 10.
- How many skills can I use on a skill check roll?
- Only one, you must choose which skill you’re using when faced with a skill check roll. Staff will ask you to select a skill from a given category for you to use for a check on a roll.
- My character is a mage, do they get bonuses too if we’re using skills:
- If you’re making a skill check that is not magic-based then you can use the bonuses you’ve earned for skills! Mages can earn skills just like non-mages can. If you’re making a skill check for your magic you cannot use the skill tree in addition.
- If I fail a skill check, can I re-roll?
- If you've purchased a reroll token you may have a skill check rerolled once per thread.
